Caring for orphans
The ‘House of Hope’ children’s home provides a safe haven for orphaned kids; a place where they can grow up in a loving, family-like environment. House of Hope is based on the concept of small family units, each consisting of ten to twelve children.
The children’s home is situated in the village of Meepitiya near Nawalapitiya town in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Located on top of a hill, House of Hope offers a panoramic view over green valleys, a meandering river, small villages and tea-covered mountains.
The Children’s home will be developed in several phases. During the first phase, the existing building on the property has been remodeled to accommodate the first home unit. A beautiful playground has been built by the Helping Hands team in July 2007. At its completion, it is expected that there will be six family units and a Vocational Training Facility.
Cherith International is supporting ‘House of Hope’ by raising funds, providing oversight and managerial support, communicating with its constituency, and financially accountability to the donors.
The facilities of the ‘House of Hope’ children’s home are also utilized to serve the surrounding, impoverished communities. For instance, poor kids from the neighborhood are using the playground with its colorful play tower, and monthly Mother & Child Clinics are being held at the premises of the children’s home.
